Volleyball Begins Final Road Stretch in Pacific Northwest

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif - After showing fight in two tough battles against ranked opponents last week, the University of San Francisco women's volleyball team (13-12, 6-8 WCC) is looking to bounce back going into the final week and a half of conference play.

The Dons will head up north this week to take on Portland (9-15, 2-11 WCC) on Thursday evening at the Chiles Center followed by a Saturday afternoon matchup against Gonzaga (6-18, 2-11 WCC) at the Charlotte Y. Martin Centre.

DONS AT A GLANCE:
  • In their recent matchup against No.18 BYU on Nov. 3, the Dons came out strong by by grabbing the first set as Claire Crijns led the way by collecting a pair of serving aces and three kills to make the deficit 8-4 early on. Crijns finished the game with 18 kills and three service aces, the sixth straight match she has tallied double digits in kills. 
  • Despite their loss against conference leader No. 2 USD on Nov. 6, USF worked hard to challenge the Toreros as they led in serving aces 4-3. Maria Petkova collected two aces as well as five kills as she carried the team in their fight. 
  • Defensively, Abby Wadas continued to prove herself indispensable for the Dons as she recorded 16 digs against BYU and 18 against USD last week. She now has 363 digs on the season for the team high.  
SCOUTING THE PILOTS:
  • Since the last time these two teams have faced each other on Oct. 15, the Pilots have been on a six game losing streak. 
  • Their last match against Gonzaga on Nov. 5, went to five sets as they won the first two at their home court until the Bulldogs came back to win it. Although the Pilots outplayed them in the stats categories as they went 71-57 in kills and 92-71 in points, 60-44 in assists, 11-4 in blocks and 80-73 in digs. 
  • Two key assets for the Pilots this season and against Gonzaga have been Jayde Harris and Maui Robins as they both recorded double digits in kills and digs against the Bulldogs. Harris with 16 kills and 13 digs and Robins with 13 kills and 21 digs. These two lead the team, Harris recording 312 kills and 123 digs so far this season followed by Robins with 203 kills and 185 digs.  
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS:
  • Last week on Nov. 5, the Bulldogs came back in a five set thriller against Portland to earn their second win in conference play. Outside hitter Zoe Thiros recorded her first double-double as she tallied 17 kills and 11 digs. She currently leads the teams in kills with 269 on the season.  
  • Helping Gonzaga in their victory, Keau Kamake'eaina recorded 38 assists against the Pilots, as she has reached double digits in every game this season. She holds the lead for assists on the team with 671 on the year. 
  • On defense, the Bulldogs have utilized middle blocker Kelsie White this season as she leads in total blocks with 71 on the year.
