USF Drops a Hard Fought Match at Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Beginning their road trip through the Pacific Northwest, the USF Dons volleyball team (13-13, 6-9) lost a hard fought match against the Portland Pilots (10-15, 3-11) 3-1 on Thursday night at the Chiles Center.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Returning to action following a two match home stand, the Dons got off to a strong start in the first set as USF took an early 8-5 lead on the road as Shyia Richardson recorded a pair of kills to put the Dons ahead early. The hometown Pilots were able to regain control of the match as they took a 22-17 lead then the Dons rallied for a few late points before Portland was able to separate and take the first set 25-21.
- The second set was a see-saw affair for the first few points as USF was able to take the early 5-4 lead thanks to a kill from Aylen Ayub and a service ace from Branson Lennon. Portland was able to expand their lead throughout the remainder of the set as they won by a 25-11 margin to lead two sets to none.
- Down two sets in the match and facing an early deficit, the Dons received kills from Orsula Staka and Claire Crijns to even the set at 12-all. The Dons were facing match point late in the third set but were able to battle back and even the match at 25 of a Pilots' error following an Isadora Nicolai serve. USF fought all the way back to take the third set by a 27-25 score thanks to Abby Wadas service ace to extend the match to a fourth set.
- Portland was able to retake control of the set and match in the fourth set as despite the Dons taking a 14-10 advantage thanks to another service ace from Wadas. The Pilots won the match and the fourth set by a 25-23 score at the Chiles Center on Thursday.
- Richardson once again had a strong night tying for the team lead with 11 kills against the Pilots while also putting up three aces and five digs for the Dons.
- Staka was able to post 11 kills as well against Portland to go along with two blocks and a dig on Thursday.
- Crijns got the start and played in all four sets where she totaled 11 kills, seven digs as well as two service aces and two total blocks.
- Wadas serving as USF's libero led the way with 12 digs for the Dons and also contributed three service aces for the Dons.
