SAN FRANCISCO - A huge comeback in the third set of a 1-1 match propelled the San Francisco Volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Pacific on Saturday at War Memorial Gym.
With the win, the Dons improved to 10-10 overall and 2-5 in West Coast Conference play.
They work hard and I love to coach them; it's a nice group to work with, head coach Diogo Silva said. It's always nice to win. Today was nice to see them happy again after a tough loss on Thursday against Saint Mary's, and we'll see them again. I'm happy for our players.
Pacific came out on swinging in the first set, jumping out to leads of 5-2 and 10-4. The Dons battled back to tie the initial set at 13. The Dons and Tigers went back and forth until Pacific pulled away for a 25-22 win.
In the second set, the Dons wasted no time in evening the match up. USF took control early, taking a 13-6 lead. The Dons never allowed the Tigers to get back into the set, winning it decisively, 25-12.
The third set shifted all the momentum in the match. The Tigers took control at the outset, taking a 10-3 early lead. USF fought back, chipping away at the lead, cutting the deficit down to five at 13-8 and later 20-15. The Dons kept fighting, cutting the Pacific lead down to three at 22-19 and then even closer at 23-22. USF finally tied it at 23 before eventually taking the set, 26-24.
It was really point-by-point, and then what is the next point, Silva said. Stay in the present and win the point that you have ahead of you. You're not going to win five points in one swing. I told them to keep the momentum and to play the game in the present.
The fourth set featured a similar script as the third. The Tigers took the advantage early, taking an early 8-4 lead before the Dons started playing catch-up once again. USF erased the early Tiger lead when it tied the set at 13. The Dons didn't wait til the very end of the set like in the third to take the lead this time, as USF took control with an 18-16 lead before eventually taking the set and the match, 25-23.
Hokulani Perez was key for the Dons today, posting eight kills, six block and four digs. Adelynn Legates also played well for USF, notching 10 assists. Petra Fritz led the way once again in kills with 13, along with six digs. Katariina Korhonen just missed a double-double with 10 kills and nine digs.
Next up, the Dons head to Southern California to face Pepperdine on Thursday, Oct. 22 and LMU on Saturday, Oct. 24. The Dons return home on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. against Portland.
