SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- The University of San Francisco volleyball team (11-14, 3-9 WCC) returned to the win column Thursday evening, defeating Portland (11-9, 4-7 WCC) in four sets, 21-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-15, at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
After dropping the opening frame, the Dons rallied to claim three consecutive sets, snapping a six-match losing streak and avenging their earlier straight-set loss to the Pilots on Oct. 3.
Emma Neukirchen led San Francisco's offensive effort with a match-high 11 kills on an impressive .526 hitting percentage, while adding four service aces and three block assists. Andjela Sojic and Katariina Korhonen followed with 10 kills apiece, with Sojic adding seven digs and four block assists.
Defensively, Maeve Bailey dominated at the net, recording 10 total blocks, including three solo blocks and seven block assists. Bailey also contributed six kills on a .400 hitting percentage, helping San Francisco limit Portland to a .065 hitting percentage.
Portland took control early in the opening set, building an 11-5 advantage before San Francisco began to close the gap. Despite a late push from the Dons that brought the score to 24-21, the Pilots secured the first frame, 25-21.
The Dons responded in the second set, jumping out to a 4-0 lead before Portland battled back to tie the frame at 16. San Francisco then took control with a decisive 9-1 run, fueled by strong defensive play and timely attacking, to secure a 25-17 victory and even the match at one set apiece.
In the third frame, Portland had an early 7-3 advantage, but San Francisco quickly found its rhythm. The Dons used a series of scoring runs to turn the deficit into a 17-9 lead, maintaining control down the stretch to earn another 25-17 set victory.
Carrying that momentum into the fourth set, San Francisco opened with a 5-1 advantage and never looked back. The Dons delivered their most efficient offensive performance of the match, hitting .444 with 11 kills and just three errors on 18 attempts. San Francisco maintained its lead throughout the frame before closing out the match with a 25-15 victory.
"This group worked very hard. We proved that we can do this together," said Diogo.
As a team, the Dons finished with 45 kills, 12 service aces and 13 total blocks. Adelynn Legates led the serving effort with five aces while adding 12 assists, and Jordan Smart recorded a team-high 20 assists and nine digs.
San Francisco returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 7, when it hosts Seattle U at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center. First serve is scheduled for noon, with the match streaming live on ESPN+.
