SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco volleyball team won its second match in a row, defeating Seattle U in five sets Saturday afternoon at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
With the win, the Dons improved to 12-14 overall and 4-9 in WCC matches.Â
"We were inconsistent, playing afraid to lose more than trying to win," said head coach Diogo Silva. "That made us shake a little bit, but in the end, I think our team was more focused and in the tough moments, we figured out how to score."
The Dons and Redhawks traded sets with USF winning the first, third and fifth sets. The opening set went back and forth until USF led, 14-13. From there, the Dons rattled off five points in a row to take a 19-13 lead. Seattle U battled back to cut that deficit in half before USF ended the set taking the next four consecutive points.Â
The second set was a repeat from the first as a back-and-forth affair. The difference in the second set is no team jumped out to a large advantage. The Redhawks eventually prevailed, 30-28 to even things up at one.Â
The Dons were the most dominant in the third set, at one point taking a 13-7 lead. The Redhawks battled back, but USF won the third set convincingly, 25-20.Â
The fourth set saw the Dons maintain initial control of the match, leading at one point, 10-7. Seattle U fought back and this set went extra, as well, with the Redhawks taking, 27-25.Â
The even contest was even tighter in the fifth and final set. No team led by more than two points in the final set. This one went extra, as well, however the Dons finally prevailed for the set and the match, with a 19-17 victory.Â
Petra Fritz tallied a double-double with 20 kills and 13 digs. Emma Neukirchen was also dominant with 16 kills. As a team, USF earned 10 more kills than Seattle U, 70-60 and nine more digs, 87-78.Â
"Emma scored 23 points and played in just three rotations," Silva said, "She played in a different position too. She's normally on the right side, but she was in the middle today. She served amazingly, one of the best servers in the conference. Petra, without Kat who was out sick today, did her job in six rotations and scoring 24 points. These two stood out to me today."
San Francisco returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 14, when the Dons head down the freeway to Santa Clara at 1 p.m., with the match streaming live on ESPN+.
