Cardinal Use Big Inning to Upend Dons

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Beginning their final homestand of the regular season, the University of San Francisco baseball team (24-28, 11-13 WCC) fell victim to a seven-run fifth inning from No. 8 Stanford (30-14, 15-9 Pac-12) on Tuesday afternoon as the Cardinal topped the Dons, 9-7, at Benedetti Diamond.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • After a scoreless first inning on both sides, the Dons got on the board to begin the socring in the bottom of the second as Harris Williams III lined a two-run single up the middle to give USF the early advantage, 2-0.
  • Adding to their lead, the Dons opened it up to 6-0 after pushing across four runs in the home half of the third, two of which came via hit by pitches.
  • Moving into the middle innings, the Cardinal responded with one run in the top of the fifth before tacking on seven runs on six hits and one error in the top of the sixth to gain control, 8-6.
  • Staying with striking distance, USF trimmed their deficit in half, 8-7, with an RBI single into right field off the bat of Mario DeMera in the bottom of the sixth. Driving home insurance of their own, Stanford answered once more with another run on an RBI single from Braden Montgomery, extending their lead back to two, 9-7.
  • Despite loading the bases in the home half of the ninth, the Dons would be unable to find the timely hitting they needed as Quinn Matthews came on for the Cardinal out of the bullpen to record his fifth save of the season and lock down the 9-7 win for Stanford.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Enjoying a successful day at the dish, Williams III tallied his third three-hit game of the season on Tuesday as his 3-for-4 performance also marked the fourteenth multi-hit contest of the year for the senior. Notably, the Denver native also recorded his tenth multi-RBI game of the season as he drove in three runs against the Cardinal.
  • Remaining dangerous on the basepaths, Luke Keaschall (30) and Williams III (19) both swiped another base on Tuesday as the duo continues to rank in the top five in the conference in stolen bases.
  • On the mound, Josh Mollerus bounced back from his last outing by tossing a scoreless top of the ninth while freshman Adam Shew logged his fourth consecutive scoreless appearance against the Cardinal.
POSTGAME: UP NEXT:
USF will be off this upcoming weekend as the Dons will return to the diamond next Tuesday, May 17 when they host UC Davis at 1:00 pm at Benedetti Diamond. Live streaming and live statistics for the contest will be available via the team's schedule page.
