SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Wrapping up their three game home stand on Sunday afternoon, the USF Dons women's soccer team (3-1-3) battled hard against the #16 SMU Mustangs (4-0-3) in a match that was decided in the final minutes that ended with a 1-1 draw.
USF sophomore midfielder
Kaya Pigoni was able to get the Dons on the board first with a goal at the 67 minute mark to excite the home crowd on a beautiful afternoon on the Hilltop.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Both teams were unable to get on the scoreboard through the first 45 minutes of action as each defense did a great job of limiting opportunities as we got to halftime with the match scoreless.
- The Dons were able to draw first blood midway through the second half as Pigoni was able to find the back of the net off a second chance ricochet to give USF the 1-0 lead.
- SMU were able to generate a response late in the game on a Julissa Cisneros goal at the 87 minute mark to draw the match to 1-all.
- The remaining time in the match saw both teams attempted to secure the game winning goal with all attempts being unsuccessful as the match ended with USF's third tie of the 2022 season.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Pigoni was in the right place at the right time on Sunday afternoon as she was able to notch the second goal of her collegiate career and her first of the 2022 season.
- Megan Nail was once again tremendous in goal recording three key saves in the draw to help her Dons achieve an undefeated week.
- Marissa Vasquez was aggressive as well for the Dons on the offensive end as she recorded five total shots, with four of them being shots on goal.
CATCHING UP WITH COACH MILLINDER:
"I thought our second half was good, we work hard and we were a lot more dangerous, that's a very good team over there but at the end of the day we should get a result there. We took a goal late, late, late and we've trained that situation before many times but at the end of the day the kids fought hard and they're gutted right now but we need to lick our wounds and get ready to play another game. Megan's done very, very well for us she's kept us in games with some big saves and she continues to get better. I thought we stretched them out and it created a lot more chances once we got the ball behind them and I knew as the game went on we would get one but one unfortunately wasn't enough today."
UP NEXT:
The Dons will now hit the road as they head down to Southern California for a Wednesday night battle with the UC San Diego Tritons (1-5-1) at 7:00 p.m. USF played UCSD last season at Negeosco stadium with the hometown team coming away with the 1-0 victory.
