SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Wrapping up the 2022 non-conference season, the USF Dons women's soccer team (5-2-3) couldn't build much momentum on the road as they fell short to the Santa Clara Broncos (3-5-1) 4-0 Thursday night at Stevens Stadium in the South Bay.
USF was unable to build much momentum on offense throughout the match as the Broncos were able to get the job done on their home field. Despite Thursday's match being considered a non-conference match, the Dons and Broncos will face off later this season at Negoesco Stadium in a rematch that will count towards the conference standings.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- The Broncos were able to get on the board first on their home field, as they scored an early goal courtesy of Izzy D'Aquila at the 14 minute mark to take the early 1-0 lead.
- Both teams battled hard in the remaining of the first half, as the Dons received six key saves from Megan Nail to keep their deficit to just one goal through the first 45 minutes of play.
- Santa Clara was able to expand their lead throughout the second half as they scored three more goals throughout the second half as they picked up the 4-0 victory becoming the first team to beat the Dons away from Negoesco Stadium.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Nail had a strong performance in goal making numerous tough saves to keep the Dons in the game as she set a new season and career-high with 10 saves against Santa Clara.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Kira Ybarra was able to compete in her first collegiate match on Thursday night as she played the final 17 minutes of action against the Broncos.
UP NEXT:
USF will now return home for the first time since Sept. 11 as they will kick off conference action at home against the Gonzaga Bulldogs (4-2-2) on Oct. 1 at 7:00 p.m. from Negoesco Stadium. The Bulldogs one last season's match in Spokane by a 2-0 score, but the Dons lead the all-time series between the programs with a 9-8-2 record.
