Golden Bears Handle Dons in Berkeley

BERKELEY, Calif. – Traveling across the Bay Bridge for an afternoon showdown in Berkeley, the University of San Francisco women's soccer team (0-4) fell on the road at California (1-2), 5-1, on Thursday afternoon.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Starting the scoring early on, Cal got on the board first at the 6:32 mark as Karlie Lema drove down the right side of the pitch before delivering a pass to the cutting Rilee Harmon in the box as Harmon tapped home the goal to give the Golden Bears a 1-0 advantage.
  • For the Dons, Gabby Rizzo attempted a shot of her own in the 11th minute, but could not quite find the back of the net to start. As the action played on, Cal extended their lead to 2-0 on a goal from Mya Daily at 33:54 in the first half.
  • After a shot on target from Marissa Vasquez in the 35th minute, the hosts remained on top by two (2-0) heading into the locker room.
  • Applying pressure out of the break, Jackie Koerwitz fired a shot on goal at 47:36, but was ultimately denied by Cal goalkeeper Teagan Wy.
  • As the match moved along, Wy went on to pick up a yellow card in the 61st minute, which gave the Dons a golden opportunity to cut their deficit in half. Doing just that, Vasquez blasted it past Wy on the ensuing penalty kick to draw the green and gold closer, 2-1.
  • Shortly thereafter, the Golden Bears responded with a penalty kick goal of their own in the 62nd minute following a foul from Isabella Ayau. Subsequently, Cal would add goals in the 68th and 86th minute as they went on to take down San Francisco by a final score of 5-1.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Finding the back of the cage for the first time this fall, Vasquez led the Dons with four total shots, three of which were on target.
  • Off the bench, Hannah Burns played the first minutes of her collegiate career on Thursday after battling injuries over her first few years on the Hilltop.
  • In goal, Kira Ybarra played the full 90 minutes for the third time this season while recording four saves along the way.
UP NEXT:
