Double Doubles from Mogbo, Williams Propel Dons Over Toreros

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Returning to the Hilltop after a two-game road trip, the University of San Francisco men's basketball team (17-6, 6-2 WCC) notched their second straight season sweep on Thursday night as the Dons defeated San Diego (12-11, 2-6 WCC), 95-79, at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • San Francisco wasted no time getting on the board, hitting its first four shots of the contest, with the first five points coming from Malik Thomas. However, four points off turnovers along with four second-chance points for San Diego gave the Toreros an early 16-15 lead through the first eight minutes of action.
  • Coming out of the 12 minute media timeout, the Dons wasted no time to regain the lead with an 8-0 run in 77 seconds of play, punctuated by a steal and slam from Isaiah Hawthorne, giving the Dons a 23-16 advantage at the 10-minute mark.
  • San Diego would not fall too far behind, scoring on six of their next seven possessions, including three-pointers by Deuce Turner and PJ Hayes, narrowing the USF lead to four, 33-29, at 6:36.
  • Following two missed free throws from Turner, Mike Sharavjamts found Marcus Williams for his first three of the game at 6:14, followed by a Ndewedo Newbury steal and dunk at 5:44, putting USF in control by nine, 38-29.
  • With the lead at seven following a Wayne McKinney III and-one at 4:06, Williams threw a pass the length of the floor, finding Jonathan Mogbo for a wide-open dunk to ignite a 12-4 run for USF and extend the lead to fifteen, 53-38, with nine seconds left in the half. McKinney III kept the Toreros afloat with a buzzer-beating three-pointer to end the half, narrowing the deficit to twelve, 53-41, before heading into the locker room.
  • Opening the second half of play, both teams had their foot on the gas offensively, each scoring 10 points through the first three and a half minutes of action, with San Francisco scoring on each of its first five possessions of the period.
  • After a Kevin Patton Jr. jumper at 16:21 cut USF's advantage to ten, 64-54, Mogbo found Williams for a three at 15:21, which started a 7-0 run for the Dons. Capped off with a fastbreak layup by Williams, the green and gold pushed their advantage to seventeen, 71-54, at 13:20.
  • Following assists from Williams and Ryan Beasley, two threes in two minutes courtesy of Mike Sharavjamts propelled the lead to twenty-one, 77-56, at the 10:10 mark.
  • At 5:28, Justin Bieker found Beasley for a stepback three, which put the icing on the cake for the Dons by giving USF its biggest lead of the night at twenty-five, 87-62.
  • Cruising to the final buzzer, San Francisco added another victory to a near perfect home record, defeating San Diego 95-79 on Thursday night.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Tying a career-high in assists, Williams posted his second career double-double by recording 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting while dishing out 10 assists in 29 minutes of play. Defensively, the guard set a new season-high with four steals against San Diego.
  • Dominating across the board once again, Mogbo led both teams in scoring with a 21-point performance on 8-of-10 shooting to go along with 10 rebounds. Mogbo now moves into a four-way tie for the sixth-most double-doubles across Division I this season by tallying his 12th double-double of the campaign.
  • Along with Mogbo and Williams, Thomas (14), Newbury (12), and Beasley (10) also scored in double-figures, marking the fifth time this season that five Dons have scored 10-plus points in one game, with USF having a 5-0 record in those games.
  • The double-doubles from Williams and Mogbo marked the first time that two USF players recorded a double-double in the same game since Feb. 12, 2022, when Yauhen Massalski (19 points, 10 assists) and Khalil Shabazz (11 points, 10 rebounds) each tallied double doubles in a USF victory at Santa Clara.
  • As a squad, San Francisco tallied 16 steals in tonight's contest, the most in a game by any WCC team this season, 14 of which came in the first half of play. The Dons scored 90-plus points in a game for the seventh time this season as the green and gold remain undefeated when they reach the 90-point mark.
  • Tonight's victory pushes USF's record at War Memorial this season to 11-1, regaining the West Coast Conference's best home record this season.
