Baseball Hosts San Jose State, Travels to Creighton

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif./Omaha, Neb. – The University of San Francisco baseball team (11-5) is set to finish its five-game homestand when it hosts San Jose State (6-10) at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Mar. 13 at Benedetti Diamond, before traveling to take on Creighton (12-2) for a three-game series on Friday, Mar. 15 – Sunday, Mar. 17, at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.

DONS AT A GLANCE:
  • San Francisco enters Wednesday's matchup against San Jose State on a four-game winning streak after sweeping Saint Peter's in a four-game set last weekend at Benedetti Diamond.
  • The Dons' offense was consistent throughout the weekend, scoring double-digit runs in two of the four games while accumulating a .403 batting average.
  • TJ Rogers and Kody Watanabe led the green and gold offensively, recording a .667 batting average apiece. Watanabe led the Dons in hits, accumulating 10 across the four-game stretch while totaling four extra-base knocks and five RBI. Rogers, the reigning Rawlings WCC Player of the Week, went eight-for-12 at the plate and led the team with two home runs and seven RBI.
  • The Dons' pitching staff had a strong series, only allowing 11 runs on 22 hits in the four games. Joe Soberon guided San Francisco in the series finale on Sunday, Mar. 10, going seven innings, allowing just one run on four hits and recording a season-high nine strikeouts.
  • As a team, San Francisco leads the WCC in pitching with a 3.72 earned-run average, ranking 25th nationally. Gabriel Barrett and Soberon rank among the best pitchers in the conference at this point of the season, at 1.04 and 1.64, respectively.
  • Offensively, the Dons are fourth in the league with a .269 batting average while ranking first in doubles (42), third in RBI (96), and third in runs scored (104).
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS:
  • San Jose State enters the week with a 6-10 record and are currently on a three-game losing streak after dropping two straight to Air Force last weekend and falling 7-1 to Saint Mary's on Tuesday.
  • The Spartans have two players hitting over .300 for the season, with Hunter Dorraugh leading with a .364 batting average. Nathan Cadena also guides the team offensively, hitting .362 while leading the squad with 21 hits.
  • Corey Sanchez and Michael Rice rank first on the team in earned-run average at 3.00.
SCOUTING THE BLUEJAYS:
  • Creighton has accumulated 12 wins in the first 14 games of the season and is coming off a narrow 8-7 victory over Omaha on Tuesday. In their lone two losses, the Bluejays dropped a 12-0 decision to Louisiana Tech on Saturday, Mar. 2, and 6-3 to Portland last weekend.
  • Creighton has a plethora of offensive weapons this season, led by Matt Scherrman, ranking first on the team and the Big East with a .438 batting average. In 11 games, he has accumulated 14 hits in 32 at-bats while leading the Bluejays with seven doubles.
  • The Bluejays have six players with a 2.00 earned-run average or lower who have made at least one appearance on the mound this season.
SERIES HISTORY:
  • San Francisco and San Jose State have faced off 41 times since the 2006 season, with the Dons holding a narrow 22-19 advantage. The Spartans have dominated the last two seasons, outscoring the Dons 45-12 in the previous four matchups. Last season, the Spartans defeated the Dons twice, earning a 23-2 win in San Jose on March 7, 2023, before securing a 12-3 victory at Benedetti Diamond on April 9, 2023.
  • San Francisco and Creighton will face off for the first time in program history.
