DONS AT A GLANCE:
  • San Francisco enters the week after earning a series victory over Pepperdine last weekend at home. The Dons overpowered the Waves throughout the three-game set, outscoring their opponent 27-8 while scoring double-digit runs twice. In a shortened seven-inning contest in the series finale on Sunday, Apr. 27, the green and gold shutout the Waves 16-0.
  • Seven players batted .300 or better throughout the series, led by Jordan Lewis, who registered a.429 batting average with three hits in seven at-bats and five RBI. Patrick Keighran (.417), Kody Watanabe (.385), TJ Rogers (.385), Kenny DeCelle (.375), and JT Amaral (.300) also led the program at the plate.
  • Rogers led the Dons with six RBI and a home run while batting .385 on five hits in 13 at-bats. Following his successful performance at the dish, Rogers increased his team-leading RBI total to 37, ranking sixth in the West Coast Conference (WCC).
  • After missing a handful of games due to injury, Keighran has accumulated a .345 batting average, three doubles, three home runs, and 11 RBI in the last seven games. He leads the program at the plate, batting .333 in 33 games this season while ranking second in the WCC in doubles with 13.
  • San Francisco's pitching staff was stellar against Pepperdine, finishing the series with a combined 2.88 earned-run average, allowing eight runs in 25.0 innings. Gabriel Barrett set the tone in the series opener, throwing seven solid innings, the longest outing of his career, allowing four runs on eight hits in the 10-4 victory last Friday.
  • Aidan Risse earned the start in the series finale on Sunday, pitching 5.1 shutout frames while surrendering five hits and one walk. His six strikeouts matched a season high while increasing his season total to 45.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN BEARS:
  • California has recently struggled, dropping seven consecutive games to fall to 18-25 this season. The program, coming off a series loss at Notre Dame last weekend, has dropped four straight Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) series and has won just three games in the previous month.
  • Despite the recent losing streak, three players have registered a .300 batting average or better, with Jarren Advincula leading the way at .366. His 68 hits, 40 runs scored, and 23 extra-base hits through 43 games also lead the program.
  • On the mound, the Golden Bears rank 13th in the ACC with a 5.76 team earned-run average. Gavin Eddy paces the team with a 4.57 ERA, allowing 23 runs in 45.1 innings pitched. Austin Turkington ranks second among qualified pitchers with a 5.27 ERA while leading the Golden Bears in strikeouts with 62.
SCOUTING THE TOREROS:
  • Following a series win at Gonzaga last weekend, San Diego is tied at the top of the WCC Standings with an 11-4 record. The Toreros have won 11 of their previous 13 games, highlighted by series sweeps of Saint Mary's and Portland and a win over nationally ranked UCLA.
  • In the three-game set at Gonzaga, San Diego scored 10 or more runs twice, including 15 in the thrilling 15-9 come-from-behind victory on Sunday, Apr. 27. The Toreros, aided by a season-high six home runs, scored nine times in the last three frames to secure the series win.
  • Jack Gurevitch and Austin Smith, two of the best overall hitters in the WCC, have combined for 120 hits, 71 runs scored, 45 extra-base hits, 16 home runs, and 76 RBI. Gurevitch has established himself as one of the best players in the WCC, ranking second in batting average (.375), slugging percentage (.649), OPS (1.127), and hits (63), third in on-base percentage (.478), and fourth in home runs (10).
  • On the mound, San Diego ranks seventh in the WCC with a 6.78 team earned-run average. Logan Reddemann, the reigning WCC Freshman of the Year, NCBWA Freshman All-America Second Team honoree, and All-WCC First Team selection, leads the program and the conference with a 2.38 ERA. He also ranks high among qualified league pitchers in strikeouts (sixth – 51), runs allowed (first – 17), walks (second – 12), and innings pitched (eighth – 53.0).
SERIES HISTORY:
  • California and San Francisco are set to face off for the 30th time since 2006. The Golden Bears hold a narrow 18-11 advantage during that span, including defeating the Dons 10-6 on March 24 at Benedetti Diamond. The Dons last defeated the Golden Bears on February 27, 2021, in a 10-6 victory on the Hilltop.
  • San Diego has a 34-24 record over San Francisco since the 2006 season and has won seven straight contests. The Dons last defeated the Toreros on April 3, 2022, in a narrow 3-2 victory on the Hilltop.
