San Francisco Drops Shortened Series Opener to Portland

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The University of San Francisco baseball team (21-29, 7-15 WCC) dropped a shortened seven-inning contest to Portland (21-24, 12-7 WCC), falling 13-3 Friday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • Portland struck first in the opening frame with two RBI base hits from Brady Bean and Jonas Salk to take an early 2-0 lead. Adding to their momentum in the second inning, Bean notched another RBI single to make it 3-0.
  • After shutting out the Pilots in the top of the third, the Dons responded with three straight two-out singles as Patrick Keighran notched an infield single to drive in TJ Rogers to cut the deficit to 3-1.
  • In the fourth, Bean continued producing for Portland, driving in another run to extend the lead to 4-1.
  • San Francisco responded in the bottom half of the frame, as Kody Watanabe slashed a two-run single through the right side of the infield, scoring Trevor Harmon and JT Amaral to get within 4-3. Harmon and Amaral reached earlier in the inning with a single and double to put runners on the corners with one out.
  • A seven-run fifth inning extended the Pilots' advantage, pushing the margin to a 9-3 lead. Two more runs came across in the following inning as Trey Swygart posted a two-run home run.
  • The Dons failed to plate a run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the game was called due to the run rule.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • Eight players recorded a hit against the Pilots. Eddison Esquivel went two-for-four at the plate, while Watanabe led the team with two RBI.
  • Kolby Calia, the second pitcher out of the bullpen, allowed just one baserunner and recorded two strikeouts in one inning pitched.
