Chaboche clocks school-record time
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – More top-10 finishes were recorded by the San Francisco men's and women's cross country teams as they both finished in fourth place Friday morning at the Arturo Barrios Invitational at Watts Cross Country Course on the Texas A&M campus. Through four meets in 2026, both the men and the women have finished in the top 10 in every competition, and now boast another pair of top-5 finishes.Â
One of the largest meets in the nation, the men's field featured 44 teams and the women's field featured 48 teams, including multiple nationally-ranked teams. Sixteen of the programs in the field were ranked in their regions.
"Today was a huge day for the men's squad," said head coach Jordan Carpenter. "It was by far the best race we've had during my tenure and probably in a number of years. We came in fourth and seven points out of the top three. We beat both Arizona State and Cal Poly who are ranked 11th and 12th in the west region, which is really exciting to see. It shows we're headed in the right direction this season. All eight guys on our men's team ran lifetime bests, which is rare that you can have an entire field do that. I'm really excited for that group heading into the championship season."
On the women's side, USF boasted three runners finishing in the top 35. Faustine Chaboche led the Dons in 14th overall, clocking in at 19:42.3. Sofia Urizar was next in 28th at 20:04.7, followed by Chloe Browne in 33rd (20:12.4). USF earned 158 points to take fourth. Chaboche's time is the fifth-best 6K time in program history and Urizar's time ranks 10th all-time in program history. The women achieve their pre-race goal of scoring five in the top 50. Carpenter felt they really executed well right from the start.Â
"Huge day on the women's side, as well," Carpenter said. "The women's field was a little bit more competitive with some nationally-ranked programs. We were running without Anna as she's sick. To do what we did today without her shows the depth of that group. We'll be excited to get her back and be at full strength. Huge day getting fourth. Faustine led the way for us. She continues to get better and show that she's not just a threat on the track, but continuing to develop into a great cross country runner. Her time was fifth in program history against a really deep field. Sofia just keeps getting better and better and really impress. She bumped an Olympian out of our all-time top 10, which really speaks to how these ladies are running right now."
The men's race featured three Dons racking up top-20 finishes. Daniel Abramowicz paced the Dons with his 13th-place finish, crossing the finish line with a lifetime-best time of 23:25.3. Recent West Coast Conference Runner of the Week Herbie Johnson was next for the Dons in 17th (23:33.7) and right behind him was Leo Conil in 28th (23:34.7). Abramowicz's time is the third best in the 8K in program history, while Johnson's time ranks sixth best and Conil's is ninth best all time.Â
"Our top three men continued to carry the weight," Carpenter said. "We have a really tremendous one through three. We were one of only two teams in the field to put three men in the top 20. It was a huge day for those three in a field that had multiple All-Americans competing and racing at the national championships. Big day for Jack Weber too. He really moved up in the field, and a massive lifetime-best time for him."
San Francisco competes again this weekend in the Bronco Invitational, hosted by Santa Clara, on Saturday, Oct. 17, at Baylands Regional Park in Sunnyvale, Calif.
