SAN DIEGO – For the first time since 2017, San Francisco captured its first conference title as the Dons' women's cross country team won the 2026 West Coast Conference Cross Country Championship from Tecolate Shores in San Diego.Â
The women took first place with 28 points, topping second-place Portland's 57 points. The conference championship is the seventh in program history and the first since 2017, the last time USF won a conference championship.Â
"Huge day for the Dons," San Francisco head coach Jordan Carpenter said. "The women got us started, team champions. They dominated the field with five of the top nine runners and 9 in the top 15. We had nine All-WCC performers and the next highest team had three. The women executed their plan to perfection. We wanted to go in front and make it our race. We wanted to make it known that we wanted to run from the front.Â
"This is a historic program and we have high expectations for ourselves. We have a legacy to uphold and the women did that today. There are a lot of Dons across the country and around the world who are proud of this group, and I certainly am as well. To see all the hard work this group has put in culminate in a championship is really special. They earned it. We're excited to bring some hardware back to San Francisco."
Faustine Chaboche led the way with her third-place finish, clocking in a time of 20:54.3. Five Dons earned all-conference first-team accolades with Sofia Urizar taking fourth at 21:09.3 and Chloe Browne right behind her in fifth (21:17.4). Bella Browne (7th, 21:30.9) and Rose Perotin (9th, 21:36.2) also earned all-conference first-team honors.Â
"Faustine battled for the individual title," Carpenter said. "Huge performance from her, and a huge jump from where she finished a year ago. She's been such a consistent leader this year, and she led this squad to a WCC Championship. It was a lot of Dons coming in right after her. There was a lot of gold at the front of the field. We put five in before any other team had three in. We left no question about it. We wanted it to be a race about fitness. They got it done."
Four Dons earned spots on the all-conference second team - Poppy Martin (12th, 21:45.6), Ava Garnys (13th, 21:55.0), Petra Helebrantova (14th, 21:56.0) and Ashlyn Jacobsen (15th, 22:05.9).Â
The men took second with 65 points. This marks the first time since 2010 that the men posted a top-2 finish. Three Dons placed top-10 finishes, earning all-conference first-team honors in the process. Leo Conil finished fifth (24:36.7), followed by Herbie Johnson in sixth (24:44.1) and Daniel Abramowicz in seventh (24:44.7).Â
"Another historic day for the men," Carpenter said. "First time we finished inside the top three since 2010. This was their coming out year. We really got to show the conference that we're not just a program with a strong women's team. We have a really competitive men's program. We wanted to be top 2 and battle it out with Portland and we did that. We had three first team all-conference, great performances from Leo, Herbie and Daniel."
The Dons now look to the NCAA West Regional on Friday, Nov. 13 in Sacramento.Â
