SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Head coach Chris Gerlufsen and the University of San Francisco (USF) men's basketball program announced today the signing of forward Ben Oosterbaan (Hinsdale, Ill./St. Thomas).
"We are pleased to welcome Ben Oosterbaan to USF for the 2026-27 season," said Gerlufsen.
"Ben is the type of player who makes everyone around him better. While at St. Thomas, Ben showed his ability to be a high-IQ competitor, a deadeye shooter, and an excellent connector on both ends of the floor. His versatility, two-way presence, and leadership qualities will be tremendous assets to our program. We can't wait to get Ben on campus this summer!"
Oosterbaan comes to San Francisco after two years at St. Thomas, where he appeared in 68 games for the Tommies, including making 34 starts while averaging 6.4 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game.
Last season, he started in all 34 games for St. Thomas as he set multiple marks in the top ten of the program's Division I single-season records: field goal percentage (seventh), rebounds (seventh), steals (ninth), steals per game (ninth), assist-to-turnover ratio (tenth), and rebounds per game (tenth). Within the Summit League, Oosterbaan ranked in the top 20 in the league in rebounds (16th), rebounds per game (18th), and steals (18th). He averaged an impressive 19.5 points per game during the Summit League Tournament, scoring a career-high 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, during St. Thomas' 80-67 first-round win over South Dakota State on Mar. 5.
In 2024-25, Oosterbaan played in all 34 games, averaging 5.1 points and 3.1 rebounds off the bench. He also finished third on the team in field goal percentage (54.0). Oosterbaan turned heads in his collegiate debut, logging his first collegiate double-double by finishing with 14 points, 10 rebounds, one steal, and one assist in St. Thomas' 96-71 win over North Central on Nov. 4, 2024. He recorded a season-high 19 points on 7-of-11 from the floor, including 3-of-6 from distance, in St. Thomas' 102-54 win over St. Norbert on Nov. 15, 2024. Overall, Oosterbaan pulled down at least eight rebounds in four games and had five games of 10+ points.
He redshirted the 2023-24 season in his first year at St. Thomas.
Academically, Oosterbaan was selected to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team twice (2024-25 and 2025-26) as well as being named to the Summit League Academic Honor Roll and Summit League Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence in 2024-25.
Prior to college, Oosterbaan was a letter winner at Hinsdale Central High School under head coach Nick Lattorre, averaging 20.3 points, 6.55 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.0 steals per game while averaging 41.5 percent from three-point range as a senior. That same season, he set a new single-season school record with 707 points to pass current Bradley University head coach Brian Wardle, while also helping his team to a school-record 31 wins. Oosterbaan was named Suburban Life Player of the Year and earned MVP honors at the Illinois All-State Game and the Hinsdale Holiday Classic Tournament. He also was an Illinois All-State Second Team selection by the Chicago Times, and earned honors from the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association and the Associated Press. Talented on the diamond, Oosterbaan was also a letter winner in baseball and was originally committed to play baseball at the University of Michigan. Academically, he was an Illinois High School Association Scholastic Achievement Award winner and an all-academic student-athlete.
