Gary Paul Delagnes was born on November 1, 1954 and attended Saint Ignatius College Preparatory. He graduated from USF on a baseball scholarship, in 1976. He was fourth at batting average in 1976 at .409 and third in on-base at .489 the same year.

He joined the San Francisco Police Department and spent ten years on patrol, and two years in the Tactical Division. He was promoted to Inspector in 1990 and spent 13 years working undercover in the Narcotics Division.Â

He served as Vice-President of the Police Officers Association from 1990 to 2004, and then served as President until his retirement in 2013. He was highly-respected and was considered the most productive leader in POA history. He worked tirelessly to secure benefits, raises and pensions for the members. He was effective at the bargaining table, and did not hesitate to confront city officials in the media.Â

He was a Founding Board Member of the Dante’s Boys Foundation.Â
