John "Jack" Francis Grealish was born on November 26, 1926, in San Francisco of Irish immigrant parents. He attended Sacred Heart High School and Saint Ignatius College Preparatory, and played four varsity sports at Ignatius.
 
He played football and basketball at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, but in 1945 was drafted into the United States Army late in World War II. He spent a year in Japan at the close of the war, and continued to compete athletically throughout Southeast Asia until he was discharged. He enrolled at USF, and played baseball for the Dons, earning All-Coast Honors, batting 0.382. He graduated in the class of 1949.
 
He was inducted into the San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame and the USF Hall of Fame, and was a member of the Olympic Club.
