John Augustin Anton was born April 4, 1955 in San Francisco, and attended his local Newark High School, where he played four years of soccer under Frank Mangiola. He played midfielder for the Dons from 1973 to 1976, and played for the United States Olympic Soccer team from 1976 to 1977.

After college, Anton was drafted by the San Jose Earthquakes and in 1979, signed with the Oakland Stompers which became the Edmonton Drillers of the North American Soccer League (NASL). Anton also played professionally for the San Diego Sockers and the Golden Gate Gales of the ASL. Following his professional career, he joined the San Francisco Police Department and was a member of their Motorcycle Unit. He also coached youth soccer.
