John Maurice Beattie was born on March 7, 1932 in Dunstan, England. During World War II, he and his sister were temporarily relocated to the countryside to avoid the German bombings surrounding London. He and his family moved to the United States after the war. He attended USF in the class of 1954, and he captained the Dons soccer team. He graduated with a Bachelor’s in History, and then received a Master’s Degree from UC Berkeley in 1956. In 1957, he moved back to England, and earned a PhD. from King’s College Cambridge and in 1961, taught History at the University of Toronto for 35 years. In the late 1960s he began doing research and publishing on crime and justice in 18th century England. In the 1970s, when University of Toronto opened its Centre of Criminology, he became its Director. He continued teaching, and was known as a generous mentor and colleague.
