Dons get goal from freshman on Senior Day, tie LMU

SAN FRANCISCO—The Dons nearly came away with its second straight victory on Senior Day but a late penalty kick by Loyola Marymount forced the game to overtime where they tied 1-1 in West Coast Conference action on Sunday afternoon.

San Francisco (6-8-3, 1-4-2 WCC) has now earned points it three of its last four games as it looks to finish the season strong on the road at Gonzaga and Portland next week.

The Dons limited LMU (3-15-1, 0-7-1) in the first half and held it to one shot in the opening period but that changed midway through the second half. In the 67th minute, Tawni Martino's shot went right to left and bounced off the post. Three minutes later, Jocelyn Blankenship delivered a corner kick right to the head of Darien Pyka and her attempt was tipped away by Madalyn Schiffel.

LMU had five corner kicks in the second half.

San Francisco bounced back with a threat of its own. In the 74th minute, Mackenzie Krieser streaked down the left sideline, with a couple of step over moves and her shot was knocked away on a great dive by LMU goalie Brittany Jagger.

The Lions attacked again late in the second half and in the 85th minute, Blankenship had a chance within 10 feet of the goal but was knocked to the ground and a penalty kick was awarded. Her try went left and in to tie the game 1-1.

It is the second consecutive season the Dons have had four or more ties in a season and is one off of tying the school record with five ties, set in 2009.

The offense continued to show that it may have turned a corner and got on the board in the first half.

Krieser was on the left side and worked a give-and-go with Alex Alugas. She then delivered a cross in front of the goal which found the foot of Amanda Whittle who chipped in the goal to give the Dons the 1-0 lead.

It was Whittle's second goal of the season.

LMU got an early chance in the ninth minute when Martino streaked through the Dons defense and went to the left side inside the box but her shot went wide right past a diving Schiffel. It would have given the Lions a 1-0 lead.

SENIORS RECOGNIZED
The Dons had five seniors play their final home game at Negoesco Stadium on Sunday. Tyler Campagna, Kelly Hoose, Layla Martin, Christina Moberg and Kelsey Moe were joined by their parents and relatives as they were honored by Head Coach Jim Millinder, Associate Head Coach Maite Zabala and Assistant Coach Katie Burton. All five started against LMU.
