Dons cannot capitalize, fall to Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—The Dons remained on the attack for much of the match but found themselves down early and were unable to recover as they lost at Cal Poly 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.

It was the team's final match before the beginning of West Coast Conference play, which starts on Friday when the Dons face Loyola Marymount.

"We need to regroup for WCC play," San Francisco head coach Jim Millinder said. "Everybody's got a clean slate starting Friday and we have to go out there and get some W's."

"It's something we have to keep at it. We're doing the right things out there. At some point the tide will turn, there's no doubt about that."

San Francisco (4-5-2) came out on the attack early and had several chances to get on the board first. Mackenzie Krieser, who made her first start of the season, had her fifth minute shot blocked. Allison Arriola took a shot minutes later only to have it go wide right.

In the 10th minute, Alex Alugas took a shot to have it saved and two minutes later had her shot go off the crossbar, the second time she has had a ball hit off the frame of the goal in as many weeks.

After the early barrage by the Dons, Cal Poly rebounded and broke through in the 24th minute when Elise Krieghoff scored her 10th goal of the season to put Cal Poly up 1-0.

The Dons took seven shots in the first half, put three on goal and had one go off the crossbar.

"We're creating quality chances…We need to do a better job finishing in the final third on those chances," Millinder said. "There is not a lot of difference between these teams. We're doing a lot of good stuff. We're just not getting the results."

San Francisco was consistently on the attack throughout the match and had seven different players put shots on goal, with Amanda Whittle leading the team with two. Whittle recorded her second goal of the season in the 90th minute.

"The result was disappointing for everybody," Millinder said. "I thought we had our opportunities to go ahead."

San Francisco goalkeeper Madalyn Schiffel faced 10 shots and recorded seven saves, the most in a single game this season.
