SAN FRANCISCO –– The USF men's cross country team will travel north to Seattle to compete in the NCAA West Regionals at 1:00 PM on Friday at Jefferson Park Golf Course. The 10K race will consist of 32 teams, all of which will be competing for a spot in the NCAA Championships on Nov. 21 in Louisville, Ky.
Participating for the Green and Gold will be Matt Leach, Alex Short, Edward Shepherd, Ryan Driscoll, Mohamed Aziz, Caleb McClain and Quentin Purtzer. USF is coming off a fourth place finish at the West Coast Conference Championships where Short led the Dons, taking fourth overall with a time of 24:58.2.
USF, ranked No. 12 in the latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), will face a very strong field on Friday, including five nationally-ranked teams in Stanford (No. 4), Oregon (No. 7), Washington (No. 17), UCLA (No. 20) and Boise State (No. 24).
The West Regional meet is one of nine regional races around the country, all of which will take place on Friday. The top-two teams in each gender at every regional automatically advance to the NCAA Championships, making for 18 teams automatically advancing. The next 13 at-large qualifiers will be determined by a process of counting up points that teams earned with wins over other NCAA qualifiers throughout the year, with the order of finish at regionals also playing a large part.
At last year's regionals, USF finished in 11th place, the best mark in program history. Jose Madera and Eric Causey both turned in very strong performances, placing 12th and 15th respectively.
