In baseball time, the transformation of Benedetti Diamond is in the top of the second inning but what an exciting first inning it was.
Since the first bulldozers pulled up on August 3, crews have been working diligently to transform Benedetti Diamond into the finest urban baseball facility in the nation. In the last month, the playing surface has been stripped and the backstop, batting cage and dugouts have been removed.
After the barren area was properly surveyed, workers were able to place pylons in the new infield area with home plate moving to the former left field corner area.
The first concrete placement is scheduled for late September or early October which will proceed a mass excavation project that will lower the playing surface approximately 18 inches.
The first phase of the project is expected to be completed prior to Christmas, according to Mike London, USF's Associate Vice President for Facilities Management.
Hornberger + Worstell, an architectural firm based in San Francisco, produced the Benedetti Diamond master plan. The firm is recognized for its expertise in the master planning and design of destination resorts, urban business and conference hotels, recreation and wellness facilities, academic and residential communities, as well as the rehabilitation and modernization of historic structures.
