SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco will play just one game this weekend, but it is a big one, as the Dons travel to Stevens Stadium – Buck Shaw Field to take on second place Santa Clara on Friday at 5:00 p.m. in USF's final road game of the 2017 season.
The Dons (6-9-2, 2-4 WCC) are currently tied for fifth and are one game away from matching their second-best win total in the last seven years. USF went 1-1 last weekend, falling to Pacific 5-3 on Friday night before defeating Saint Mary's 3-2 in double overtime in Moraga.
USF is rolling on offense right now, they have scored two or more goals in four-straight contests, three goals in back-to-back games. That's the first time USF has scored three or more goals in consecutive games since Oct. 28-31, 1997 when USF defeated Hawaii 5-1 and then Gonzaga 4-3.
As a team, the Dons are fourth in the WCC in shots per game, averaging 13.47 attempts per contest. They are also tied for fourth in goals with 21 on the season. Senior forward Sonja Giraud is second in the league in shots per game at 2.94. Giraud and Samantha Jehnings are tied for seventh and 10th respectively in goals with seven and six. While Olivia Camera remains one of the nations' leaders in total saves with 111.
Santa Clara (10-6-1, 5-1 WCC) leads the WCC and is 24th in the nation with 37 goals scored. The Broncos have outscored their opponents 37-27 while putting 124 of their 239 shots on goal.
Kelsey Turnbow is tied for second in the conference with nine goals and leads Santa Clara with 22 points while trying for the team lead with four assists. Julie Doyle is tied for fourth in the league with eight goals and has added three assists. Maddy Gonzalez has six goals and three assists while Maria Sanchez is tied with Turnbow with four assists. Four other Broncos have multiple goals and two more have one each.
Melissa Lowder has appeared in 12 games and has two shutouts. She has allowed 19 goals for a 1.65 GAA with 54 saves for a .740 save percentage. Courtney Ogren has played in six matches and allowed eight goals for a 1.40 GAA. She has made 17 saves and has a .680 save percentage with one shutout.
