BSB | Pitching Staff Combines for 11 Strikeouts in Shutout Win over UC Davis

The Rundown
SAN FRANCISCO - The University of San Francisco Dons baseball's (27-26) pitching staff combined for a nine-inning shutout over UC Davis (15-32), beating the Aggies 3-0.
 
After three scoreless innings, USF would grab the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Michael Perri would lead-off the inning with his 21st double of the year, the senior would then advance to third on a wild pitch. Riley Helland would hit a single over the Aggies' leaping second baseman, driving in Perri from third. USF would add another run with one-out and runners on second and third. Jack Winkler would step up and hit a deep fly-ball to center field, bringing in Helland from third to make it 2-0, USF, after four innings.
 
In the seventh inning, the Dons would add an insurance run, pushing their lead to three runs. The inning would begin with a lead-off single from Nick Yovetich, his second hit of the afternoon. The freshman would steal second, then advance to third on a ground ball from Riki Urata, putting Yovetich in scoring position with one-out. Jonathan Allen would come up next and lace a single off the wall in right field, bringing in Yovetich in from third to make it 3-0, USF.
 
The pitching staff for the Dons would keep the Aggies' bats quiet all afternoon, combining for nine shutout innings. Alex Pham, who got the start, would go two innings and strikeout two. In third inning, Daniel Slominski would come on and fan one batter, while allowing just two hits. He would earn the win on the afternoon after shutting down UC Davis in the fourth inning, which the Dons would come out and score two in the home half of the inning.
 
After two shutout innings from Joey Steele, senior's Grant Goodman and Brendan Jenkins would close out the game strong. Goodman would fan four batters, while Jenkins came on in the ninth and struck out two of the three batters he'd face, earning the save in a 3-0 win for the Dons.
 
With this win, the Dons move to 27-26, and return to Benedetti Diamond for the final series of regular season play against Kansas State beginning on Thursday at 3 p.m.

  • RJ Cordeiro, Perri, Puskarich and Yovetich all hit doubles today.
  • Puskarich and Yovetich led the team in hits today, grabbing two hits apiece.
