SPOKANE, Wash. – The University of San Francisco women's soccer team surrendered an early goal and then went on the attack. Unfortunately for the Dons (8-4-2/1-1-1 WCC), a two-goal lead in the second half was not enough as the Bulldogs (9-3-1/2-0-1 WCC) scored twice late in the second half. Both teams would settle for the 3-3 tie.
"Tonight, was such a battle," said head coach
Jim Millinder. "We played very well the first half, we surrendered an early goal but battled back. We were up 2-1 at the half and we talked about getting that third goal which we did early, but then kind of faded. I was hoping their second goal wouldn't come till about 15 minutes later, but it came early and then they got their equalizer."
"It's tough to win here, they are a very good team. You walk away thinking we got a point on the road but we feel like we should have gotten the result. We just need to be a little more disciplined and be a little smarter when we are trying to preserve a W. That's a very good team and they are going to give people a tough time down the road. Overall, I'm very pleased with our girls, they played hard. We'll take the point on the road, to take one up there isn't bad."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Dons had a corner kick in the first minute, but it was Gonzaga who capitalized early. The Bulldogs scored on a goal by Samantha Heilman when she chipped a shot over
Olivia Camera, who was way outside of the box after a goal kick.
• In the 15
th minute, the Dons broke through.
Miciah Madison took a ball deep into Bulldog territory down the right side, and sent a pass back into the box to
Samantha Jehnings. Jehnings sent the ball to the back left corner of the net for her eighth goal of the year. For Madison, it was the first of her three assists on the evening.
• Less than four minutes later,
Keely Roy recorded her fourth goal of the year. Madison once again had the assist, sending a pass to Roy back in the middle. Roy corralled the ball and sent it to the far right corner of the net.
• Early in the second half the Dons kept up the pressure. Madison went down the far side of the field and sent a high arching cross to the near side of field, where
Ashley Humphrey then sent the header to the back right post, giving the Dons a 3-1 lead. The goal was Humphrey's fourth of the year.
• Midway through the second half the Bulldogs cut the Dons' lead in half via a penalty kick. It was the third PK the Dons have allowed this week. USF tried to bleed the clock, but the Bulldogs maintained the pressure and eventually scored the equalizer in the 86
th minute on a corner kick.
