SAN FRANCISCO — Hits, walks and runs were aplenty Sunday for the San Francisco baseball team, as everyone got in the action during a 12-1 non-conference victory over CSU Bakersfield at Benedetti Diamond that earned the Dons their first three-game sweep since March 23-25, 2018.
HOW IT HAPPENED
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Dons (4-2) finally chased CSU Bakersfield starter Edgar Barclay (1-1) in the sixth as they blew up for five runs in the inning. Two singles to lead off the frame would force the Roadrunners (2-6) to go to the bullpen, where USF would take full advantage. Kyle Knell got the Dons' scoring started with his first career base hit and RBI on a two-strike single to right field, making it 2-0. During USF's five-run sixth-inning rally, six consecutive batters reached base and 10 took turns at the plate. When all was said and done, the Dons led 6-0.
- San Francisco then did it again in the bottom of the seventh, batting around for the second inning in a row and tacking on four more runs to lead 10-0. USF took advantage of six free passes in the inning (four walks, two hit-by-pitch). Jonathan Allen, who finished the day with a career-high five RBIs and two doubles, had one of his two RBI doubles in the seventh to drive in two runs.
- Sunday started out as another pitchers' duel like games one and two, with San Francisco holding just a 1-0 lead through five innings. USF starter Grant Young (1-0) would toss 5 1/3 scoreless innings, scattering three hits with four strikeouts and a walk in his first victory of the season. Barclay also threw 5 1/3, only giving up one run until he ran into trouble in the sixth and gave up two more. He struck out eight and walked only one.
- 12: The Dons scored a season-high 12 runs Sunday. It was their most runs scored in a game since also scoring 12 versus Santa Clara on April 29, 2018.
- 15: The Dons also had a season-high 15 hits (three doubles) Sunday, their most since that same April 29 game versus Santa Clara. Four different Dons had multiple hits, led by Chase Hodkinson's 3-for-4 performance.
- 22: 22 different Dons saw action in Sunday's game, 17 position players and five pitchers. Eight different players scored runs, 10 players had hits and three pitchers recorded multiple strikeouts.
- The Dons head out on a five-game road trip starting Tuesday at nationally ranked Stanford. They then travel east to face Big 12 Conference member Kansas State for a three-game series starting Friday. The trip ends back in the South Bay where it started on March 5 when the Dons face San Jose State. Fans can find all live coverage links on USFDons.com.
