SAN FRANCISCO — The last two weeks of the West Coast Conference season will be something to watch, as things got even more interesting on Sunday with Pepperdine avoiding a sweep at the hands of the University of San Francisco baseball team, beating the Dons 10-1 at Benedetti Diamond to keep up with the WCC postseason chase.
HOW IT HAPPENED
HOW IT HAPPENED
- San Francisco (27-21, 14-10 WCC) positioned itself well after winning the first two games of this weekend's series, and was looking for another boost in the standings with a sweep on Sunday. But Pepperdine (20-20, 11-10 WCC) finally got through against USF starter Alex Pham (3-3) in the sixth to break a 0-0 tie and take a 3-0 lead. The Waves had five singles in the inning to score three runs.
- It had been a pitchers' duel through the first five innings. Pham and Pepperdine starter Trevor Kniskern (4-3) went scoreless frame for scoreless frame. Pham struck out eight and walked only one through the first five innings, leaving runners in scoring position in the third and fourth, and only allowing three hits to that point. But he would give up five runs (four earned) on seven hits over the next 1 2/3 innings before leaving the game. He finished with nine strikeouts, his second-most of the season in the longest outing of his career, 6 2/3.
- Pepperdine extended its lead with five more runs in the seventh, taking an 8-0 lead. Four of the runs came with two outs, as the inning was extended on a USF throwing error. The error itself allowed two runs to score, and it was followed by an RBI single from Joe Caparis and a bases-loaded walk by Quincy McAfee.
- The Dons got their first and only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh. Two free passes (hit-by-pitch, walk) and a wild pitch put two runners in scoring position, and then RJ Cordeiro brought home Nick Yovetich with an RBI groundout. The Dons went 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position on Sunday and 0 for 15 overall when runners were on base.
- 2 for 3: Robert Emery went 2 for 3 on Sunday, owning two of the Dons' three hits on the day. It extended his current hitting streak to four games and he has hit safely five in the last six games.
- 10: Pepperdine's 10 runs marked the fourth time in the last seven games a USF opponent scored double-digit runs. Pepperdine also had 15 hits, the sixth time in the last seven games a USF opponent has had double-digit hits.
- San Francisco concludes its five-game home stand at 3 p.m. Tuesday against East Bay rival California. Fans can purchase tickets and find all live coverage links on USFDons.com.
