SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Nationally ranked UC Santa Barbara completed a three-game sweep of the University of San Francisco baseball team Sunday with a 6-2 win at Caeser Uyesaka Stadium.
UC Santa Barbara's (9-5) first run was a two-out RBI single in the third inning that put them ahead for good. It would stay 1-0 through the top of the seventh, as Grant Nechak (0-1) worked five innings of one-run ball for the Dons, striking out two. USF (4-11) had the tying run in scoring position in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but they would go 0 for 5 in the game with runners in scoring position.
The Gauchos added four insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh after loading the bases with no outs to make it 5-0. Two hit-by-pitches and a single led to a two-run single from Broc Mortensen, a sacrifice fly from Christian Kirtley and an RBI single from Bryce Willits.
The Dons wouldn't go quietly Sunday, though. San Francisco got two pinch-hit solo home runs in the ninth inning to get themselves on the board. Harris Williams' first homer of his career gave USF its first run, and Ryan Davis' second homer of the season made it 6-2.
The Dons travel to Saint Mary's on Tuesday for a non-conference affair before kicking off West Coast Conference play with a three-game series versus Pepperdine starting Friday. Fans can find all live coverage links on USFDons.com.
