Great Pitching and Defense Leads Dons Past Pilots

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Playing their first conference road game of the season, the USF Dons baseball team (13-11, 2-2) put together a great performance on the mound and played great defense to come away with the 3-1 victory over the Portland Pilots (15-6, 2-2) Friday night at Joe Etzel Field.

Friday starter Owen Stevenson was outstanding throwing 6 2/3 innings and allowing just one earned run and striking out three Portland hitters picking up his second win of the season. Gabe Giosso got the offense started with a solo home run in the first inning, while Brandon Greim and Nick Yovetich each hit sacrifice flies to get USF the 3-1 victory on the road.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • The Dons got off to a quick start Friday evening as Giosso launched his team-leading fifth home run over the wall in left center field to make it a 1-0 USF lead early.
  • USF added another run one inning later as Brandon Greim hit a sacrifice fly to center field that brought home Harris Williams III to give the Dons a 2-0 advantage.
  • Portland scratched across their lone run of the game in the fourth inning on an RBI single to make it 2-1 that would be the only blemish on Stevenson's fantastic outing.
  • Oscar Lepe came in with a runner on first and two outs in the bottom of the seventh and retired the lone Portland hitter he faced to pick up Stevenson and the rest of his teammates.
  • Yovetich brought in the final Dons' run of the night on a sac fly to right field that scored Michael Campagna who began the inning with a leadoff double.
  • Josh Mollerus came in during the eighth inning and pitched two dynamic innings to pick up his second save of the season by striking out five of the seven Portland hitters he faced for the Dons' 13th win of the season.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Stevenson did exactly what you expect from the ace of the staff as he was in control getting 20 outs and allowing just one earned run as he picked up his second victory of the season.
  • Giosso continued his torrid start to his Dons career with his team leading fifth home run and 19th RBI of the season that gave USF an early lead they never would give up.
  • Greim was a force at the bottom of the order going 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI making things happen for USF.
  • Campagna did great work on both sides of the ball going 2-for-4 with the bat and calling an excellent game for nine innings. The junior from San Diego also threw out a would be base stealer to get the Dons out of a tough inning in the bottom of the second.
  • Mollerus continued his stellar season out of the USF bullpen by striking out five Pilot hitters as he picked up his second save of the season in a two-inning effort.
UP NEXT:
The Dons now look ahead to game two of the three game weekend series as they will send LHP Weston Lombard (2-2, 3.57 ERA) to the mound looking to secure the series win. First pitch will be at 1:00 p.m. live streaming and live statistics will be available via the team's schedule page.
