Zags Top Dons in Back-and-Forth Affair

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Breaking out the bats for the second straight day, the University of San Francisco baseball team (17-18, 6-6 WCC) traded blows with No. 17 Gonzaga (21-8, 9-3 WCC) again on Sunday, but ultimately fell to the Bulldogs, 17-13, at Benedetti Diamond on Sunday afternoon.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Out of the gates, both starting pitchers found their groove as the first run of the contest did not come until the top of the fourth inning. In their turn at the plate, GU pushed across five runs on three hits to take an early 5-0 advantage.
  • Clawing back, USF responded with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth, which was highlighted by RBI singles from Mario DeMera and Brandon Greim. One inning later, the Dons evened the game at 5 with two runs in the home half of the fifth as Gabe Giosso delivered a two-run single for the green and gold.
  • Moving into the sixth, USF continued their momentum at the dish as they broke the game open with six runs on four hits, which was led by a bases-clearing single from Harris Williams III.
  • Similar to Saturday, Gonzaga rallied back to knot the contest at 11 in the top of the seventh. Shortly thereafter, the Dons responded once more as Williams III worked a bases-loaded walk to put USF back in control, 12-11.
  • Digging deep in the late innings, GU answered with two runs in the top of the eighth on a home run from Cade McGee followed by four runs on three hits in the top of the ninth.
  • Aiming for more magic in the home half of the inning, USF didn't go down without a fight as the Dons scored one run on another RBI single from Williams III. Despite the late push, the Gonzaga bullpen would go on to shut the door and secure the series win with a 17-13 victory.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Enjoying a career day at the dish, Williams III finished 3-for-5 with a one walk, two runs scored and career-high five RBI's. Alongside the senior, Giosso also tallied his first three-hit performance in a Dons uniform as the first baseman went 3-for-5 with one walk, two runs scored and two RBI's.
  • Finding their rhythm at the plate, five different Dons notched at least two hits on Sunday: Williams III (3), Giosso (3), DeMera (2), Greim (2) and Nick Yovetich (2).
  • On the mound, Lance Santerre posted his ninth scoreless outing of the season and his fifth in his last six games.
