Lions Squeeze Past Dons at Sullivan Field

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Beginning their final road trip in Los Angeles, the University of San Francisco women's soccer team (5-10-2, 1-6-2 WCC) fought until the final whistle on Wednesday night, but LMU (11-4-2, 5-2-2 WCC) pulled out a narrow victory, 2-1, at Sullivan Field.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Although LMU would record the first shot of the contest at 1:45, Lindsey Chau logged the opening shot for San Francisco at 6:02, but opposing goalkeeper JJ Hoover denied the forward's attempt to begin the match.
  • Ten minutes later, Kate Zimmerman attempted a shot on frame at 16:42, but Hoover once again turned away the Dons.
  • Less than two minutes after Zimmerman's attempt, Jennessa Groves netted the game's first goal to give LMU a 1-0 lead at 17:40. Holding onto this advantage for the remainder of the half, the Lions maintained their one goal lead at the break.
  • Out of the locker room, Natalie Drotzmann logged a shot of her own, but the sophomore was unable to find the back of the net.
  • As the half played on, San Francisco continued to apply pressure offensively, which included an attempt from Erika Braun at 57:43. Breaking through in the 60th minute, Sydney Harpster found Chau for her third goal of the season as the Highland native leveled the match at 1-1.
  • Down the stretch, Gabby Rizzo and Kiana Faucette recorded attempts for the green and gold, but neither were able to convert. In the 83rd minute, LMU responded as Kylie Dobbs found Callan Harrington for the go-ahead goal to put the Lions up, 2-1.
  • Not allowing another shot attempt from San Francisco in the closing minutes, LMU hung on to secure the home victory over the Dons, 2-1.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Moving into second place on the team with six points, Chau is also tied for the team lead in assists (2) while also tying for second in goals (2).
  • Making her second straight start, Emmie Paulson logged a shot in the second straight match for the Dons.
  • In goal, Kira Ybarra recorded double-digit saves for the second time this season as the Long Beach native tallied ten saves on Wednesday night.
