RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The University of San Francisco baseball team (9-9) earned a bounce-back win at UC Riverside (10-8) in a 12-1 seven-inning victory Wednesday afternoon at Riverside Sports Complex.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Batting around to begin the game, San Francisco totaled six runs to take a commanding 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With two on and one out, Kody Watanabe and Jordan Lewis plated the Dons' first two runs as Eddison Esquivel doubled down the right-field line for a 2-0 advantage.
- Adding to the lead shortly after, Patrick Keighran recorded a two-run home run over the left field wall, doubling the Dons' margin to 4-0.
- Brendan Burke and Tyler Harries later solidified the scoring for the green and gold, registering an RBI single and a fielder's choice to expand the margin to six, 6-0.
- After UC Riverside plated a run in the bottom of the second, San Francisco responded with four tallies in the next half frame to push its lead to 10-1. JT Amaral led off the inning with a solo home run, and Lewis later posted a one-out, two-run single for a 9-1 edge. Lewis scored during Esquivel's at-bat, plating the Dons' 10th run on an error by the pitcher, Marco DiGirola.
- Adding to the lead in the top of the sixth inning, Trevor Harmon connected on a two-run home run, scoring Keighran for a 12-1 edge. Keighran registered a one-out double down the left-field line in the previous at-bat for his second base hit of the game.
- With the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh, Myles Kallinger ripped a grand slam to left field, plating four more runs to extend the lead to 16-1.
- Shutting down the Highlanders in the bottom of the seventh inning, Cal Amborn struck out two of the three batters he faced to conclude the game.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- San Francisco plated a season-high 16 runs during the seven-inning contest while hitting four home runs, tied for the most in a single game this season. The Dons' 26 home runs this season leads the West Coast Conference, while four players have totaled three through 18 games.
- Five players recorded multi-hit performances, led by Watanabe, who went three-for-four at the plate and scored two runs in the lead off position. Along with Watanabe, Esquivel, Keighran, Harmon, and Amaral had a multi-hit game with two hits apiece.
- Keighran, Harmon, Amaral, and Kallinger found success with the long ball, combining for four home runs. Kallinger registered his first career home run, a grand slam, in his lone at-bat off the bench in the seventh inning.
- Gabriel Barrett earned the start on the mound, pitched two innings, allowed one run on four hits, and struck out four batters. Kolby Calia earned the win as he threw the following three innings, keeping UC Riverside off the basepath while totaling three strikeouts.
