SAN FRANCISCO – In what was a back-and-forth thriller to start the season, San Francisco won in overtime against Hawaii, 85-79.
The Dons started the contest on a 20-0 run, capped off when grad student Lucia Yenes sank her first three of her USF career to help USF go up 20-0. Yenes finished the game with seven points and three assists while shooting three-for-six from the field.
The Rainbow Wahine answered back to finish the first and second quarters, going on a 32-13 run going into the second half. After both USF and UH went back-and-forth in the third quarter, the Dons found themselves down 12 with 3:23 left in the fourth.
Sophomore and All-WCC Preseason Team member Aina Cargol immediately scored a fastbreak layup and three to get USF within distance. The Dons' Candy Edokpaigbe, Savi Mi and Cargol all scored the final four buckets to force overtime.
Mi, an NJCAA DI First Team All-America honoree at Dodge City Community College, scored the first four points in overtime to give the Dons the lead and they never gave it back. Carol scored seven of her team-leading 17 points in overtime to help cement the victory.
USF has won the opening game of the season for the second consecutive season after defeating UNC Greensboro to start the 2025-26 season, 64-40.
The Dons had four double-digit scorers, with Cargol and freshman Maria Burliga leading the way for USF with 17 each. Cargol also added a game-leading six assists while Burliga was second on the team with 11 rebounds. Junior guard and 2025-26 All-WCC First Team member Candy Edokpaigbe scored 15 for her 17th straight game with at least 10 points going back to the 2025-26 season. Mi also ended the contest with 14. Sophomore Noelia Mouriño led the team with 14 rebounds.
