Dons Open USF Challenge with Four-Set Victory Over Lady Tigers

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco volleyball team (6-5) opened the USF Challenge with a victory, defeating Texas Southern (1-9), 3-1 Thursday afternoon at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- San Francisco jumped out to an early lead in the match, dominating the opening frame with a 25- 15 win. Trailing 10-6 early in the set, the Dons recorded nine unanswered points to gain the lead at 15-10. Petra Fritz propelled the team during the scoring run as she totaled three service aces.
- The green and gold held its momentum in the later stages of the first set, extending the lead to nine, 23-14, following a kill from Hokulani Perez. After Texas Southern trimmed its deficit to eight, San Francisco totaled the final two points to secure the set victory.
- In the second set, the Dons quickly gained a double-digit lead over the Lady Tigers at 16-6 following five straight points. Holding onto the lead for the remainder of the frame, San Francisco closed another dominant performance with a 25-16 second-set win.
- After Texas Southern bounced back with a 27-25 victory in the third set to stay alive in the match, San Francisco closed the match with a 25-20 win in the fourth to solidify the four-set victory.
- Recording her second double-double of the season, Fritz led the Dons with 18 kills and 10 digs while swinging at an impressive .469 clip. She also added a season-high four service aces, with three coming in the opening set.
- Emma Neukirchen reached double-digit kills for the second straight match and third time overall this season with 13. Posting a .458 hitting percentage throughout the match, Neukirchen hit over 45 percent for the second time in six matches.
- Jordan Smart and Piper Justiss impressed in passing, finishing with a combined 44 assists. Smart paced the team with 25, while Justiss added a season-best 19.
- As a team, San Francisco totaled 62 kills, tied for second most in a single match this season. The green and gold also recorded 62 kills in the five-set win over UNLV on September 13.
