Dons Unable to Overcome Early Deficit

The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Dons (18-19) and was the team's first loss since losing at Stanford on Mar. 31. USF will have a chance to start a new streak when it plays at UC Davis tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
The Wolfpack (28-9) jumped on the board in the first when they got a solo home run from Ryan Howell to make it 1-0. Nevada capitalized on two walks and five more hits to extend its lead to seven.
Connor Hofmann and Nico Giarratano got the Dons going in the bottom half of the inning when Hofmann led off with a walk and Giarratano singled to set up runners at the corners with no outs. However, USF was unable to take advantage as Nevada got a strikeout and an inning ending double play to get out of the jam.
After Nevada jumped ahead by 10 in the fourth, the Dons answered back and got an RBI double from Dominic Mirolgio to plate two and an RBI single from Blake Valley, cutting the deficit to seven.
Valley had his first multi-hit game and went 2-for-3 on the afternoon.
The Dons got on the board again in the seventh when, with runners at first and second, Manny Ramirez, Jr. hit a slow hopper to third and the throw skipped off the glove of the first baseman to allow Zack McCoy to score.
Sophomore right hander Mack Meyer pitched the last three innings of the game and allowed one run on four hits.
NOTES:
Peter Danna made his first career appearance and got his first at bat. He lined out hard to centerfield.
