LOS ANGELES -- Two early goals by Loyola Marymount set the tone for a long night for USF in its season-ending match Saturday night at Sullivan Field in Los Angeles.
The Dons never recovered after falling behind 2-0 a little more than 10 minutes into the match and suffered a 5-1 loss to the Lions. Leon Schwarzer accounted for the only goal of the night for the Dons, as the junior found the back of the net with five minutes remaining to end the Lions' shutout bid.
A quick strike by Adian Perez off an assist from John Bovell gave LMU a 1-0 lead just 2:58 into the game. Less than six minutes later, Matt Gooden scored his second goal of the year off an assist by Alvaro Madrigal giving LMU a 2-0 lead at the 10:13 mark of the first half.
The Lions added a third goal before intermission as Brandon Sanchez scored an unassisted goal, his first of the season.
Loyola Marymount extended its lead to 5-0 in the second half on goals by Alvaro Madrigal (50:29) and Garrett Amadoa (76:01).
Garrett scored his eighth goal of the season at the 84:53 mark, as he blasted the ball past LMU keeper Carl Rubschlager off a rebound for the Dons only score of the night.
USF keeper Ryan Buckingham went the distance in nets for USF and was credited with eight saves. Dante Pezzi did not allow a goal for 79 minutes before giving way to Rubschlager for the final 10:51 of the game.
With the loss, USF ends the season with a 7-9-0 overall record and 3-4 mark in the West Coast Conference. The Lions finish 10-8 on the year and 4-3 in the WCC.
