STANFORD, Calif. – The University of San Francisco men's soccer team tightened up its defense by allowing just one goal but that was the difference getting edged out, 1-0, to No.5-Stanford (5-1-0) at Cagan Stadium on Friday night.
The Dons (1-6-0) allowed a season-low one goal, which came in the 11th minute when Cardinal Drew Skundrich chipped in the ball past Dons goalkeeper Ruben Stuiver.
USF had three chances to tie the game, but could not cash in on their chances. On the first opportunity, Bryce Kaminski's header inside the six went wide. On the next chance, Santiago DiGuiseppe's shot from the left side curved around the goal, just missing wide. And the Dons final chance was a Tawwad Emiola breakaway that missed the mark.
San Francisco was outshot 12-to-6 but were even with the number of shots-on-goal with three each.
STATS OF THE GAME
- Tonight's matchup against No.5-Stanford marked the fourth top-25 team the Dons have faced this season, along with No.21 UCLA, No.4-Indiana and No.17-Butler.
- The one goal given up against Stanford, the two-time defending National Champions, ties for the least number of goals given up this season. Back on September 8, the Dons gave up just one goal in the 2-1 win against San Diego State.
- USF and Stanford both had three shots-on-goal apiece.
Dons head coach Eddie Soto on the positives from the match:
"I'm proud of how well we defended. The backline performed well with both Matt Orr and Bar Twito doing a nice job holding the backline. We didn't break, giving up that one goal."
Soto on the missed chances:
"We had three really good chances but we didn't convert on any of them. The difference was Stanford got their chance and made it count."
Soto on a player that stood out in the match:
"Bryce Kaminski's work ethic was unbelievable. From box to box, he is a very hardworking player."
