DENVER, Colo. -- The University of San Francisco men's soccer team battled back in the second half but ultimately fell to Denver, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.
With the loss, the Dons moved to 4-5-4 overall and 0-1-3 in West Coast Conference play.
Denver opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Erik Collins converted a penalty kick to give the Pioneers an early 1-0 advantage. The home side maintained its lead throughout the opening half, outshooting San Francisco 8-2 through the first 45 minutes.
The Pioneers extended their advantage in the 57th minute when Tyler Schommer found the back of the net off an assist from Collins, giving Denver a 2-0 lead.
San Francisco responded in the 69th minute as David Raphael scored his eighth goal of the season off an assist from Isaiah Easley, cutting the deficit to 2-1 and bringing the Dons back within striking distance.
The Dons continued to apply pressure in the closing stages, generating eight shots in the second half compared to just two in the opening period. Raphael nearly found the equalizer in the 83rd minute, forcing a save from Denver goalkeeper Alex Hohl. Ben Norris added two late attempts, but San Francisco was unable to find the tying goal before the final whistle.
Raphael and Norris led the San Francisco attack with four shots apiece, with Raphael recording all three of the Dons' shots on goal. Easley added an assist on Raphael's second-half goal, while goalkeeper Lucas Jones finished with three saves.
Denver held a 15-10 advantage in total shots, but San Francisco generated five of its six corner kicks in the second half as the Dons pushed for an equalizer.
San Francisco returns to the Hilltop on Wednesday, Oct. 21, to host Pacific at 7 p.m. from Negoesco Stadium.
