SAN FRANCISCO -- Earning its much-needed first conference win of the season, San Francisco Men's Soccer defeated Pacific, 2-0 on Wednesday from Negoesco Stadium.
Not only earning a clean sheet victory, but the Dons also get their veteran captain and leader back on Wednesday, Matthew Duggan.
With the win, the Dons improved to 5-5-4 overall and 1-1-3 in West Coast Conference play.
"This feels great. We've had a lot of time to think about this game and prepare for this game," head coach Chris Brown said. "We knew we were getting our captain and our leader back who has meant so much to this team on and off the field the last four years. The guys really rallied around that. We know it's do-or-die time. We have to start getting results. The guys were ready for it. I thought it was as great team performance from our forward line to our goalkeeper. We controlled the game well and took care of our opportunities. I thought it was a professional performance from us."
The Dons got on the scoreboard first in the 26th minute. David Raphael sent one towards the goal on a free kick. The ball deflected off the Tiger keeper to Jameson Raby who sent it back to Duggan who punched it in the back of the goal, putting USF up 1-0.
"It's great to be back playing with the boys," Duggan said. "It's been a long road, just glad to be back and, most importantly, got the clean sheet and a goal, which is always nice. Jamo just challenged the goal and he dropped it right to me. I just had to make sure I didn't miss. It was pretty easy."
The Dons extended their advantage in the 41st minute when Oscar Harris found the back of the net off an assist from Kaleb Afsari, giving USF a 2-0 lead.
USF brought the offensive pressure all night, out shooting Pacific, 22-11.
Lucas Jones made five saves in goal, recording his second shutout of the season.
David Raphael posted five shots, one was on goal.
San Francisco remains on the Hilltop on Saturday, Oct. 24, to host Seattle U at 7 p.m. from Negoesco Stadium. Come out earlier in the day and watch the USF women's soccer team play Denver at 1 p.m. The women's team will be honoring the 50 year anniversary of women's athletics at USF while the men's team will celebrate it's alumni game.
