SAN FRANCISCO — The University of San Francisco women's basketball team led early and charged hard late on Monday, but visiting Idaho's 3-point shooting caught fire in the second and third quarters, as the Vandals came from behind then held on for a narrow, 66-60, non-conference win at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Dons (2-2) led by as much as seven in the first quarter thanks to the defense holding Idaho (2-1) to just 3 for 14 shooting with two turnovers to start. Then Gina Marxen took over, scoring eight consecutive points for the Vandals with two 3-pointers. That cut the Dons' lead down to one, and with a Lucie Hoskova 3-pointer before the buzzer, USF's lead was back to four at 18-14 through one.
The Vandals started the second quarter much better than the first, making four of their first six shots including another trey from Marxen. That 3-pointer gave Idaho a one-point lead. Later, a 3-pointer from Beyonce Bea broke a tie and sent the Vandals into the lead for good at 30-27.
Idaho's 3-point shooting was hottest coming out of the gate in the third quarter. The Vandals made three more treys in the third quarter's first four minutes – two from Bea during a 12-2 run – to push their lead to 15 at 48-33. Idaho would make four 3-pointers in the frame, though it would go cold from deep for the rest of the quarter, going 0 for 3.
San Francisco made its push in the fourth quarter. USF scored six unanswered points while shutting down Idaho with four consecutive turnovers – six total – and 0 for 4 shooting during a 5 1/2 minute stretch. But the Dons also went 3 for 10 during that period, leaving them trailing by seven with two minutes to play. One last push saw Mikayla Williams score four consecutive points, and a driving layup from Hoskova made it a four-point game with 14 seconds to play. But Marxen made both her free throws with one second left to ice the victory.

NOTABLE NUMBERS

19: Hoskova and Williams both led the Dons with a season-high 19 points each. Williams was one rebound away from her second double-double with nine rebounds.
19, AGAIN: Leilah Vigil pulled down 19 rebounds for the second consecutive game. She had eight on the offensive end and 11 on the defensive end. She's averaging 12.0 rebounds through four games.
60: San Francisco was held to less than 70 points for the first time this season. It was the first game in which the Dons did not have at least four players score double-digit points.
