WBB | Vigil Sees Double Again as LMU Holds On

LOS ANGELES — The West Coast Conference's leading double-doubles getter got it again on Thursday, as University of San Francisco women's basketball's Leilah Vigil scored 15 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for her seventh such performance of the year, but host Loyola Marymount got a career performance from freshman Aspyn Adams and was able to hold off the Dons in the second half to win, 76-69, at Gersten Pavilion.
HOW IT HAPPENED
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Vigil was balanced throughout the game in only her second start of the season. She scored in every quarter and had at least two rebounds in each period. It was the ninth double-digit rebounds performance of the year for the WCC's leading rebounder (she entered Thursday averaging 10.1 boards per game). It was also one of her better shooting nights on the year, going 6 for 12 from the floor (50.0%).
- But for all the posturing and presence that Vigil established in the first half and throughout the game, Adams had an answer seemingly every time. The rookie scored 24 points Thursday after entering the night averaging only 5.5 per game and with just one double-digit scoring game to her name. She didn't miss a shot until the fourth quarter, starting the game a perfect 7 for 7, including 6 for 7 from beyond the arc.
- Adams did most of her morale damage to the Dons in the second quarter when USF (7-9, 0-4 WCC) was trying to sustain its lead. Marija Galic had just erased a two-point deficit with her first 3-pointer, and Adams answered right back and put the Lions back ahead with her third trey. San Francisco built a three-point lead before halftime, but Adams converted a four-point play this time with her fourth long ball and a free throw to send LMU into the locker room with a one-point, 33-32, lead.
- USF shot better and scored more points in the second half, but so did LMU. The Lions shot 56.7% after halftime to better the Dons' 48.4%, adding to their lead in the third and fourth quarters. The Dons were within five points or less four times in the fourth quarter's first four minutes, but could get no closer. Once LMU's lead reached double digits, USF dropped it under 10 five times, but again, could not inch any closer.
- 0-4: USF's 0-4 start to WCC play is its slowest start out of the gate in five years. The 2014-15 team started conference play 0-5.
- 12: Galic scored a career-high 12 points, coincidentally against the same team her previous career high (7) was also against, on Feb. 9 of last season. She hit two 3-pointers for the second straight game and also had a rebound, an assist and a steal.
- 14: Vigil's seventh double-double gave the team 14 on the year. They've already far surpassed last year's team total of four, and are now pursuing the 2017-18 team's total of 17.
- San Francisco completes its first WCC road trip at 2 p.m. Saturday with a cruise up the Pacific Coast Highway to play Pepperdine in Malibu. Fans can find all live coverage links on USFDons.com.
