THE RUNDOWN
SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco's baseball team battled back against Cal, coming within one run multiple times, before falling 5-4 to the Golden Bears on Tuesday.
Â
Cal got the scoring going early in the game, knocking in two runs in the top half of the first inning. The lead-off batter singled before being driven in on an RBI double by Cal's Tanner Dodson, who scored on that same play from a throwing error. At the end of the first inning Cal led, 2-0.
Â
The Golden Bears added another run in the third inning before the Dons got a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Ross Puskarich got a one-out single to begin the fourth inning for USF, which was followed up an RBI double from
RJ Cordeiro. The junior saw ten pitches before lining a double into right field that drove in Puskarich to make it 3-1, Cal.
Â
In the fifth inning
Aaron Ping led off the inning with a double into the left center field gap. A batter later
Jonathan Allen drove in Ping with a single to right center that allowed the senior to cross the plate and make it 3-2, Cal.
Â
Unfortunately, when the Dons scored runs, Cal had an answer with runs of their own. The Golden Bears added a run in the sixth and seventh innings to increase their lead to 5-2. USF stayed positive, adding a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Allen's ninth double of the year got the inning started for USF. Allen was moved over when Mike Perri added a hustle single to move Allen over to third. A batter later
Ross Puskarich flied out to right field, which drove in Allen to bring the Dons within in two, 5-3.
Â
The Dons ramped up the pressure on Cal in the bottom of the eighth inning, which got started with a bunt single by
Tyler Villaroman. The sophomore then stole second in the next at-bat, later advancing to third on a pass ball.
Brady Bate was next up, getting hit by a pitch in a 3-2 count.
Aaron Ping was next in the batter's box, singling up the middle to drive in Villaroman and advance Bate to second base. That was all the Dons would get, however, with
Nick Yovetich hitting into a fielder's choice that ended with Bate being tagged out at home. In the next at-bat, Allen flied out to right field with Ping tagging on the play, but the senior was out at home to end the inning.
Â
The Dons are now 9-7 on the season and will open West Coast Conference play against Pacific this weekend beginning on Friday.
