SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco men's soccer team wrapped up its home non-conference schedule Sunday night in a hard-fought battle against Northern California foe Sacramento State, as the Hornets survived a late push by the Dons to escape with a 2-1 victory under the lights at Negoesco Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sacramento State (2-5-2) won on the golden goal just under four minutes into the first overtime. After the Dons (2-6-1) cleared out a corner kick, the Hornets sent it back in with a long pass from the 38-yard mark. Brad Bumgarner bodied the ball to settle it, where it rolled to Benji Kikanovic for a 20-yard strike that found the back of the opposite side of the net, sealing Sac State's victory.
- San Francisco had notched a thrilling equalizer only minutes before. With just 82 seconds left in regulation and facing defeat trailing 2-1, Matt Orr sent a free kick into the box from near the sideline. It banged off of two Sacramento State players before finding the foot of Sandro Bradara, who tapped it in to tie the score at 2-2.
- Trailing 2-0 in the second half, the Dons caught a break in the 68th minute with a penalty being called inside the box, giving them an opportunity for a penalty kick. Santiago Digiuseppe converted the chance, making it 2-1 with 22 minutes to play.
- Sacramento State struck early in the first half to take command of the match. Benji Kikanovic sprinted down the right side of the penalty box to chase down a ball he had tapped ahead. Just before reaching the end line, he crossed it back into the box, where a charging Dominic Scotti powered it into the back of the net from 12 yards out, making it 1-0.
- The Hornets grew their advantage to 2-0 13 minutes into the second half. RJ Moorhouse passed back and forth with Josh Dull from the top of the box to the far corner. On the second give-and-go, Dull kept it, dribbled down to the end line and crossed it right back to Moorhouse, who buried into the upper right corner.
- 1: The Dons lost by just one goal. It was their fourth one-goal decision this season. They are 2-2 in those one-goal games.
- 23: San Francisco outshot Sacramento State 23-12 in the game. The Dons had double-digit shots in both halves, but took no shots in overtime.
- The Dons conclude their non-conference schedule next week on the road at Cal State Fullerton. USF faces the Titans at 7 p.m. Saturday. Fans can find all live coverage links on USFDons.com.
