SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Rob DiToma, head coach of the University of San Francisco baseball program since 2022, has signed a contract extension through the 2030 season, announced on Monday morning.
"The proof of excellence is not just in the results," Interim Athletics Director Stephanie Shrieve-Hawkins said. "Rob has led, and continues to lead, with high character and integrity - investing his time and heart in our student-athletes, his staff, and serving as a highly respected partner in the department and university. We are thrilled to extend his contract and celebrate the positive culture he adds to the USF community."
DiToma completed his fourth season on the Hilltop following the conclusion of a successful 2026 campaign, where he led the program to 28 victories and a third-place finish in the West Coast Conference standings at 15-12, the best finish and the most league victories for the program since 2021. The team also secured the No. 3 seed in the WCC Tournament, earning a conference postseason bid in back-to-back years for the first time in program history. The Dons earned a place in the six-team field in 2025, the program's first appearance in the WCC Tournament since the 2022 season.
During the four-day tournament in Scottsdale, Ariz., San Francisco dominated Santa Clara in the opening round, earning a 10-4 victory, the Dons' fourth win over the Broncos during the season, to mark the program's first postseason win since 2013. The green and gold added wins over top-seeded and WCC regular-season champions Gonzaga and No. 2-seeded Pacific to reach its first-ever WCC Tournament Championship game under the conference's current format. Needing two wins in the championship, San Francisco posted a narrow 9-8 victory over No. 5-seeded Saint Mary's to force a winner-take-all contest on the final day.
"I am so proud to be a Don and thankful to the University of San Francisco, President Aceves, Interim Athletics Director Stephanie Shrieve-Hawkins, and Executive Sr. Associate AD for External Relations Frank Allocco for their belief in me and my capacity to lead this baseball program," DiToma said. "The future is bright, and the culture that has been created around the program is something everyone can be excited about. "DonBall" has become a real thing, and I feel it is a privilege to continue to be the Head Baseball Coach on the Hilltop."
Since arriving on the Hilltop in June 2022, DiToma has accumulated 93 victories, one of five head coaches in program history to total 90+ wins in their first four seasons at the helm. Under DiToma's leadership, eight different players have earned All-WCC recognition, and seven have earned All-Academic honors. Along with team success, Blake Shepardson was drafted in the 11th Round by the Chicago White Sox in the 2024 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft, and alumni Mattie Thomas, Aidan Risse, and Michael Campagna have also signed contracts with professional affiliated leagues.
In addition, the San Francisco Athletics Department, along with DiToma, announced the expansion of its Bridge to Excellence Funds to include baseball, marking a significant step forward in the department's commitment to supporting student-athletes in a rapidly evolving collegiate athletics landscape.
