Robert Giron was a native of Hawaii, and received a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education at the University of Hawaii. Before coming to USF, he served in the United States Army for 22 years, and was stationed in Europe and at Oakland. He was Intramural Sports Director at the Oakland Army Base, and coached the All-Army Volleyball team. In Europe, he coached the All-Army Boxing Team.

He began at USF as the Equipment Manager in 1970, and worked there for more than 36 years. In the Summer of 1972, he was chosen to represent the United States as a basketball official for the All-Army team at the World Games in Europe. Giron’s name was synonymous with USF basketball, having worked with the program prior to its suspension in 1982 for recruiting violations. He worked with seven different USF coaches: Bob Gaillard, Dan Belluomini, Jessie Evans, Jim Brovelli, Pete Barry, Phil Mathews and Phil Vukicevich. His office was in the basement of the War Memorial Gymnasium and its walls were covered with photographs of past athletes and celebrities.

Both of his sons played basketball at USF, and Jimmy Giron served as an official for the Men's Pac-10 Basketball games.
