Darrell Tucker was born on May 23, 1980 in Oakland and attended McClymonds High School.Â
He played four seasons for the Dons, and in his freshman year, made First-Team All-WCC, and he tied with Gonzaga’s Richie Frahm for the league lead in scoring at 16.0 PPG while scoring 20 points or more points in six conference games. He finished his USF career as the sixth best shooter in the WCC at 52.4%, and made 46.2 % of his three-pointers, while being ranked fifth in rebounds at 7.0 RPG. Tucker was named WCC Freshman of the Year and WCC Player of the Month for February.

Tucker ended his sophomore season with an All-WCC Honorable Mention, while finishing third in the WCC with 16.5 PPG and fourth in rebounding with 6.8 RPG. His 44.3 FG% and 80.4 FT% were the best among all returning players. He scored 20 points or more in games against Portland, Fresno State and rival Saint Mary’s, and was named MVP of the Northwestern Mutual Mayor's Game vs. Fresno State.Â
In his junior year, Tucker was a First Team All-West Coast Conference selection for the second time. He became the first WCC player to average a double-double since former Don Darryl Johnson in 1992. In the WCC, he ranked third in scoring (18.9 PPG), and led in rebounding (10.7 RPG), the highest for a WCC player since Johnson accomplished the feat in 1992.Â

Tucker finished his collegiate ranking eighth in field goal percentage at 46.6%, seventh in free-throw percentage at 77.6%, and scored a career high of 34 points against Portland.
