Don Lofgran was born on November 8, 1928 in Oakland, attended Oakland Technical High School, played basketball for them and was named High School Player of the Year in 1946. He attended Grant Technical College in Sacramento for two years before transferring to USF in 1948. At USF, he averaged 15.0 PPG playing small forward. Lofgran utilized a one-handed jump shot that many considered innovative. His junior year, he was part of the USF team that beat Loyola Illinois in the NIT Tournament, and was named MVP.
 
Lofgran was drafted by the Syracuse Nationals in the first round (11th pick overall) of the 1950 NBA Draft. After one year, he was traded to the Indianapolis Olympians, spent a year in the ABA with the Utica Pros, and returned to the NBA to play with the Philadelphia Warriors, and then the Milwaukee Hawks. His career points averaged 6.1 PPG, 3.9 RPG and 1.0 assists.
