imageJay Hale graduated from the then Saint Ignatius College in 1931, as it was transitioning to become the University of San Francisco. Hale played forward and center with the then Grey Fog basketball team from 1927 to 1930. In his first season he played in 14 of 21 games, helping the club achieve a 16-5 record in the 1927-1928 season, and scored 10 or more points in four games. He scored 12 points against Loyola College in Los Angeles, and against Nevada in Reno, on his way to the Far Western Conference Championship. That year, Jay was named to the All-Coast Team.

In Hale’s second season, 1928-1929, the team outscored their opponents 842-535, with Jay accounting for 216 of those points and they finished 21-2. He scored 10 or more points twelve times, and had a season high of 18 in a 43-31 win against the Stockton Amblers. Hale was instrumental in advancing Saint Ignatius to the program’s first appearance at the National Championship, where the Grey Fog lost to Phillips University (26-17).

In Jay’s final year, he helped guide the team to a 9-4 record in a season that was cut short. In the final game against the Saint Mary’s Gaels, the Grey Fog won 34-21. During his Saint Ignatius career, he went a combined 12-5 against rivals Saint Mary’s and Santa Clara.
